Founded in 2009, Speyer is an independent school that serves gifted students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. It began with 26 students in a two-classroom space on West 61st Street and has grown to more than 300 students in a modern, 85,000-square-foot campus on West 59th Street in Midtown Manhattan.
Now in its sixteenth year, Speyer has developed an interdisciplinary curriculum with an innovative approach that encourages and inspires a passion for learning and questioning in each of its students. We carry on the mission established by The Speyer School in New York City in the 1930s, an experimental public school with a curriculum designed to meet the educational and social-emotional needs of gifted children founded by Dr. Leta Hollingworth. Hence the “Legacy” portion of our school’s name.
Speyer’s central principle is that accelerated learners are happier and achieve more when offered a curriculum tailored to their specific abilities and when surrounded by other high-achieving children. This insight was first introduced in the pioneering research of Dr. Hollingworth, and her premise has been re-confirmed by recent studies. Today, at Speyer, we proudly carry her work forward.

The Speyer Legacy School, a K-8 school serving gifted learners, seeks a dynamic, innovative, and passionate leave replacement teacher for a Second Grade Lower School co-taught classroom.
The ideal candidate possesses creative problem-solving skills, a sense of humor, enthusiasm for learning more about designing innovative curriculum, a positive attitude toward change and strong interpersonal skills that allow one to cooperate and collaborate effectively with others.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assist co-teachers in implementing motivating lessons in Literacy, Humanities, Math, and SEL, which reflect knowledge of curriculum and students’ interests and abilities.
Supervise groups of 20 students with and without a co-teacher.
Collaborate with a co-teacher on instructional and classroom decisions.
Implement rules for behavior and classroom procedures and routines.
Engage respectfully with families and demonstrate sensitivity to cultures, values, configurations, and beliefs.
Demonstrate a passion for lifelong learning and actively pursue professional development rooted in individual and schoolwide goals.
Desire to meaningfully integrate technology into the classroom.
Participate in the school community and school duties.
Promote respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion as a core value of the School, a shared responsibility in partnership with the school community.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of child development, best practices, and current trends in education.
Solid classroom management skills, including organizing time, space, and materials for most effective learning.
Creativity and innovation in both curriculum and instruction;
Capable of generating high-quality instructional materials.
Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
Ability to integrate technology effectively into classroom instruction to enhance student learning.
Skilled in creating a learning environment that is challenging, motivating and age-appropriate.
Flexibility and open-mindedness
Qualifications
BA or BS required
Elementary Education degree - preferred
Classroom teaching experience
Experience in differentiated instruction - preferred
Understanding of the nature and needs of gifted learners - preferred
Salary
The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $110,000, prorated based on the number of days of the leave; a final determination will be based on years of teaching experience and level of education.
Schedule
The position begins at the end of February and concludes in mid June.
7:45 AM-3:45 PM: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday
7:45 AM-4:30 PM: Tuesday for faculty meetings

The Position:
The Director of Institutional Advancement plays an integral role on the senior leadership team and is responsible for managing fundraising and all advancement related activities for the school. This role reports directly to the Head of School and works closely with the senior leadership team and the Board of Trustees. The Director of Institutional Advancement oversees a staff of two and is charged with the opportunity to build upon a strong philanthropic culture at the school.
